We first tasted this coffee amongst a lineup of samples that included many of the Ethiopian releases we’ll be offering this year. The overall quality of the table was excellent, but this particular Peruvian Geisha from Finca La Palma, grown by Oscar Abad, stood out immediately. Peru has given us plenty of beautiful washed coffees over the years, but this lot is easily our favourite to date. It has all the clarity and balance we look for in a washed single origin coffee, and then some.
In the cup it reminded us of a high-altitude Colombian Geisha—something we have always admired—showing a plush citrus-juice mouthfeel and finely tuned acidity. As we developed the roast profile further we were surprised, and quite a bit delighted, to find red fruits showing up in the cupping bowl. Juicy apple and blackcurrant came to the front, supported by raspberry and citrus zest. The result is a coffee that feels both elegant and surprising, refined yet full of life.
Although roasted light, this coffee has shown real versatility across brew methods. As a filter coffee, it presents clean, fruit-driven sweetness with a lingering finish. Pulled as espresso, shorter yields bring plush body and citrus, while longer or “turbo” styles highlight its florality and showcase each note in sharper detail.
